A city of purest gold, far beyond the vast skies,
Where God will wipe away every tear from the eyes,
Of His dear blood-washed people, upon that heavenly shore,
Where life’s many vexations they will experience no more.
For, in such a marked contrast to this pilgrimage here below,
Teardrops from our eyes will never again flow,
With heartache and failure, disappointment and doubt
Banished forever, with naught to thereafter cry about.
The need for hospitals and medicines no longer will remain,
With doctors, too, redundant, in this land of no pain;
And no old age will restrict our enjoying heaven’s wealth,
As we know the vigour and bloom of everlasting health.
And there shall be no more curse, it instead turned to blessing,
As we’re freed from the burdens, which so often lie pressing,
With the consequences of man’s fall so reversed
Nature will smile on mankind, as it did at the first.
There will be no more sea, whereon fierce storms arise,
Just the still waters of peace, underneath tranquil skies,
With fellowship then unbroken, as the end of separation
Means goodbye to goodbyes and mourning the loss of a loved one.
Yes, no cold, lifeless bodies will in the ground there be laid,
Nor will the sound e’er be heard of the gravedigger’s spade;
And the funeral cortege will be but a memory,
In this land of no death, where we’ll live eternally.
And, as heaven’s morning breaks, there’ll be no more night,
With no need of sun or candle, for the Lamb is the Light;
And the glory of the Lord will lighten every face
Of those whose lives were transformed through the riches of His grace.
And the bliss of no defilement this grand pictures completes,
With no violence or impurity on heaven’s golden streets;
Where no harmful substances will lay precious lives to waste,
With anger, hate and malice by perfect joy there replaced.
But, for a prepared people only heaven’s a prepared place,
Who through faith in Christ have been saved by His grace,
Renouncing all self-effort, and good works they had done,
Trusting instead in the merits of God’s sinless, spotless Son.
So, if to heaven one day you would also wish to go,
The matter of your salvation must be settled here below,
That, with the saints of all ages, and the Saviour they adore,
A blissful forever you may share - where the heart breaks no more.
